Perhaps, the rebels now ought to re-evaluate their own position and alliance with the Arabian regimes.

Faruq Logolu, deputy chairman of the opposition Republican People’s Party in Turkey, has made a serious allegation about what is happening to Syrian women in Turkish refugee camps. Speaking in the Turkish parliament on February 19, Logolu said female Syrian refugees are being sold to rich sheikhs in Arab countries. While he did not name the rich sheikhs or the countries they reside in, it is not difficult to speculate.
The Saudis are notorious for grabbing young girls from all over the world. There have been many cases of old Saudi men, some in the seventies, buying Indian girls as young as 12 and taking them away to Saudi Arabia as “brides.” Many have ended up in prostitution rings. Other Saudis frequent brothels in Thailand as well as import girls from Spain and other European countries. To be fair to the Saudis, they are not the only ones involved in such criminal activities that would be punishable by death if Islamic law were properly applied. Qataris, Kuwaitis and Emiratis are no better.
The revelation about Syrian girls and women being sold to rich Arab sheikhs brings to light the shady side of the Arabian rulers’ character and the kind of “help” they are extending to Syrian rebels. Perhaps, the rebels now ought to re-evaluate their own position and alliance with the Arabian regimes. The charge by the Turkish parliamentarian that was published in the Turkish daily, Taraf, on February 19 is extremely serious and deserves serious attention.
The plight of Syrian refugees is already grim. Conditions in Turkish camps, where there are about 180,000 Syrian refugees, and in Jordan where they lack basic necessities, have caused immense suffering to the refugees. Now they face a new threat to their very honour and dignity. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has said 75 percent of Syrian refugees in Turkey are women and children. Is this the way Muslims are supposed to treat women and children fleeing war? Whatever happened to the Islamic obligation of providing help and support to people in distress that Allah commands in His noble Book (Al-Qur’an 2:177)?
The behavior of Arab sheikhs is disgraceful. Muslims worldwide should take serious note of such disgusting behavior and not allow the suffering of Syrian refugees to be exploited by these criminals to satiate their lust.
The Turkish parliamentarian also revealed that Syrian refugee children are being trained to use guns and are being sent to Syria to fight against Syrian government forces. This is a clear violation of the rights of children and is prohibited by the Geneva Conventions. If Turkey is permitting this to happen, then it would be complicit in war crimes. Turkey has backed the rebels and other mercenaries that have infiltrated into Syria to cause mayhem and destruction. The latest revelations add a new and more sordid dimension to what is happening in Syria and how innocent people are being exploited.
